Internet Database Development

When you make a business database accessible to employees and partners across the Internet, you have all of the issues around good database design compounded with the need for enhanced data security on the web, coordinated distributed access, and performance issues across geographies.

Before Smart Clients, the focus was on creating centralized database applications.  However, these can create problems for end users.   If every query and every attempt to sort or filter data must be submitted to a centralized server, then users will be forced to wait.  If network access is unavailable, then internet database users cannot get any work done.

The solution is to have centralized management and control of the internet database with smart client software to handle local actions.  A smart client application takes advantage of the otherwise unused processing power of a PC to handle tasks that do not need centralized control.  A simple example is when a user wants to sort a report or filter a database.  As the data has already been downloaded, why submit a request and re-download the same data?  A smart client can do the sorting and filtering.  It can also do much more.

The result is that smart clients can handle actions and cache information for increased performance, while coordinating internet database access across wide geographies.

Smart clients are becoming widely used by users who may not even know the term.  For example, Google Gears is a smart client application that is not used for traditional databases, but can be used by Gmail to speed performance and handle off-line access.

Practical Computer Applications (PCA) specializes in designing custom database-driven applications using the Microsoft SQL Server and .NET Smart Client platform.  Our ASP.NET web applications are fast, powerful, secure and easy to use.
